It is a daunting task to reach the top by bike. The road climbs 6500 vertical feet in 28 miles. The climb is not particularly steep, but the sheer length, altitude, exposure, and weather make summiting the mountain an accomplishment in itself.
Tom's record of 1:41:20 set in 2004, was over 4 minutes faster than the previous record that stood for 12 years. This is truly remarkable given the horrendous weather that day and the fact that the second place finisher and 6 time winner of the event, Scott Moninger came across the line almost 9 minutes behind Tom.
