Lance's record on this climb is old history thanks to Tom! The Col de la Madone is a 7.5 mile climb that starts in the French village of Menton. It rises from close to sea level to over 3000 feet.
Lance Armstrong has made this mountain famous by timing himself to the top each year just prior to the start of the Tour de France. His goal was to break 31 minutes. He did so in 1999 and went on to win his first Tour. Six years later, Tom broke Lance's record by 23 seconds. Many other top professionals have recorded times on the Madone and other than Lance's time, none come within a minute of Tom's record.
