The peak of Brasstown Bald is the highest point in Georgia. "The Bald" is one of the steepest climbs in the United States with pitches over 20% that test the will and legs of any top professional rider.

In the 2005 Tour de Georgia, Tom rode away from the field on the slopes of Brasstown Bald, sealing his overall victory in the race. The following year, Tom once again proved this was his mountain by winning the Brasstown Bald stage ahead of rival Floyd Landis.
