Fabrics
eVent fabric is a highly breathable waterproof fabric, and its also very expensive. In this case you get what you pay for - eVent is very durable and works super-well for high energy outdoor activity.
Waterproof: The industry standard for waterproof testing is the water column test. This measurement is accomplished by measuring the milimeters of water that can be held by the fabric without leaking. The minimum requirement is 1000mm for a fabric to be considered waterproof. Breathable: MVTR (Moisture Vapor Transfer Rate) is measured in a chamber, divided vertically by the fabric being tested. A dry atmosphere is in one chamber, and a vapor-saturated atmosphere is in the other. A 24-hour test is run to see how much moisture passes through the fabric from the saturated chamber to the dry chamber.
The eVent fabric used in our Elite jacket has a waterproof rating of 30,000 mm and a MVTR of 22,000. The US Military has done extensive testing on waterproof breathable fabric technology. According to Dr. Phil Gibbons, the eVent MVTR rating is about 20% higher than Entrant GII XT from Toray. It is about 80% higher than Nextec from Patagonia, and 100% or more higher than Gore-tex XCR, Dermizax, Memebrain from Marmot, Sympatex, Conduit from Mountain Hardware, Omnitec Titanium from Columbia Sportswear, Schoeller WB-400, and Northface Hydroseal. eVent makes the most breathable waterproof fabric on the market today, and only a few companies are licensed to use it. Showers Pass spent almost a year working with eVent to obtain a license to use their fabric - they want their logo on only the best gear!

eVENT Fabric is a Direct Venting ™waterproof barrier that marks a significant advancement in ePTFE laminate technology. Using proprietary and patented Dry System ™technology, eVENT Fabric sets a new standard for comfort by allowing perspiration to dissipate and vent without saturating the inside of the fabric.
At the core of eVENT Fabric is an ePTFE (expanded Polytetrafluoroethylene) film that has been rendered oil-repellant, and thereby free from body-oil contamination, via a method that retains both the inherent open-pore structure of the membrane as well as its hydrophobic properties.
eVent has a 50% increased vapor transmission over standard Goretex, as documented by US military testing at the material science laboratory in New Jersey, USA.
eVent laminates a Teflon membrane to a nylon base fabric to prevent movement of water in the liquid state, just like Goretex. This Teflon membrane has thousands of microscopic holes that allow water vapor to pass but not liquid water. There is a big difference between the two fabric makers. Early (circa 1970s) Goretex was easily contaminated by skin oil and sunscreen, thereby allowing water in the liquid state to pass through and wet the inside of the garment. Consequently, Gore added a second (polyurethane) layer on Goretex fabric to prevent contamination by oils, but this polyurethane inhibits vapor transmission.
eVent does not add a second layer of Polyurethane like Goretex. eVent Teflon membrane is treated through a propritary process to prevent contamination by skin oils or sunscreen. This propriatary coating does not inhibit vapor passage away from the garment wearer like the polyurethane coating that Goretex uses.
The Elite jacket uses an eVent three layer fabric which adds durability and helps move moisture over a wide area for rapid transmission to the outside. The outer nylon (the yellow fabric) has a very open weave, which helps allow water vapor (sweat) to escape from the garment very effectively. The bottom line: eVent fabric used in the Elite jacket works really well - it's not cheap but its the best stuff going.
